To be nominated and selected for membership into this prestigious program, a hotel must be at least 50 years old; has been designated by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior as a National Historic Landmark or listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places; and recognized as having historic significance. In summer the lake is a center of activity in summer, with a swimming beach, boating and fishing. In 1910, the Dining Room Circle extension was completed, and this marked the end of additions to the Mountain House until the modern era. At its highest capacity, the Mountain House boasted 300 rooms (currently 259). The Victorian ambiance of the decor and furnishings has been maintained since the Mountain House’s inception.

Mohonk’s legacy began in 1869 with the identical twin Smiley brothers, eccentric and frugal Quakers and educators who had a vision and who made some good choices and got lucky. The ten-room inn was renovated and expanded, and the Mountain House underwent a grand but gradual conversion to the place we see today. The facility opened with accommodations for 40 guests in June of 1870.
Sunday brunch is especially bountiful (and popular with many day visitors), with offerings including salmon and shrimp and a dozen or so desserts including those silly messy chocolate fountains that kids love. PoolMohonk's heated indoor pool in the new Spa Wing is lovely and family friendly. Situated in a wood-beamed and windowed enclosure, encircled by lounge chairs, the pool is just the right size and temperature for a pleasant swim. (The underwater sound system was perhaps the only detail that struck me as needless bells-and-whistles.) Depth ranges from a few inches in the shallowest end to 5 feet. There's a small selection of kickboards and floaters and goggles available.
There is swimming at the beach, and guests enjoy canoeing, boating, and paddle boats. Dotting the majestic cliffs and the carriage roads are over 125 scenic summerhouses, a mainstay of the Mohonk experience since the early days. Rock scrambles such as the Labyrinth (with its famous Lemon Squeeze) have been popular since the early days of Mohonk, allowing guests from all eras to navigate these remarkable tunnels and fields of boulders.
